Donkey Care

Why have mini donkeys?

First and foremost, mini donkeys are incredible animals that bring so much love and joy to our farm! Donkeys are, by nature, very loving, gentle and affectionate. They have a calming presence that we believe everyone should get to experience. Our donkeys are extremely friendly and social and they love to be around us.

What are their basic needs?

Clean pasture space, basic housing from the elements like rain and extreme cold, feed and hay supplementation if you do not have pasture grass, mineral blocks/salt licks, hoof trimming by a farrier typically every 8 weeks and lots of love! It is also advised that you deworm on a schedule and provide yearly vaccinations; this can usually be done by the farrier as well.

Are mini donkeys hard to care for?

Mini donkeys have been an easy addition to the farm. In terms of farm animals, they are generally very healthy and low maintenance. They require significantly less space than cattle and other larger equine like horses. They do not require training like horses or mules typically require. They do not require a barn, however a lein two or other small structure is highly advised, especially to keep them out of the rain.
